We know what we want, we know the life we want to have, we know the sort of work we want to do, we know what lifestyle we desire. But how does one get from here to there? Sometimes it seems like it’s just never going to happen, like we can’t ever get to that place. I know that feeling well. I spent many years stuck in a place I didn’t like and it seemed so difficult to get to where I wanted to be that it felt pretty much impossible. It depressed me deeply. I felt stuck. And my life stagnated. It stood still and then got filled up with more and more muck that made me miserable. I once read a version of this quote from Einstein that has stuck with me over the years, “It is the same with people as it is with riding a bike. Only when moving can one comfortably maintain one’s balance.” At the time I kind of resented it. I was stuck, I felt like I couldn’t move. However, eventually I got so depressed and fed up that I finally began taking actions, determining exactly what I wanted for my life, and taking steps in that direction, even though it felt daunting and still seemed so far out in the future that I might never reach it. But… better to start now and achieve it in 10 years than to wait 10 years to start and then be 10 years further away. It may seem overwhelming. But what you need to do, MUST do for yourself (because you deserve every bit of happiness you can dream of) is to ask yourself what you want your life to look like. It can be helpful to list this out, I did this by writing down everything I could possibly think of that I truly and deeply wanted for myself. And then you must start taking steps towards the life you imagine for yourself. If you aren’t leading a life you are pretty stoked on right now then it will probably seem as though it is impossible, that there is no way to get from here to there, that there is too much that needs to change, that you don’t have the time or freedom to make the necessary changes, that it might just take eternity, but you can get there eventually. It will take time. I’ve already started shifting my life but I have some mighty daunting tasks I am facing myself these days, for example, getting my online business going and getting my art business going. These things aren’t easy and they can take a few years even but I know I won’t be successful at them if I don’t keep taking steps forward. And that’sexactly what you need to do. You can start small. Just pick one step to do each day that is in the direction you want your life to go. If you want to buy a house but you have no money try putting a very small amount of money into a savings account each week that you don’t touch, $20, or even $5, every little bit takes you a tiny bit closer to your goal. Or if you want to live off the grid and become self-sufficient and you don’t have a property yet but you have a small yard or a patio or even a sunny window sill, then plant some veggies or fruits, or a smaller step, buy some soil. If you want to be a professional musician call around and find out about open mics in your area, or write a song. Just one tiny step each day will bring you ever closer to your dream. Some examples from my own life: I want to eventually grow most of my own food. One day I bought a couple seed packets. One day I put soil in some pots and planted some seeds, I planted some more seeds another day. Another day I cut up some potatoes to plant and prepped soil in the garden bed. Today I planted the cut up potatoes and some beet seedlings that grew from the seeds I planted earlier. Another thing I have been working on is getting my art business going, I want to make colorful happy art and make a decent amount of money by selling it. One day I googled and called places to find out about getting some paintings scanned. One day I took my paintings to be scanned. One day I ordered prints of the scanned images. One day I listed my prints on etsy for sale. One day I bought materials to build a canvas. One day I built a canvas. Many days I worked on a painting. One day I drew a bunch of drawings. One day I got frames to put the drawings in. One day I could design a business card. One day I could order my business cards. You get the idea. And if you want and you have enought time you can do more than one step each day. I often do. But not always. As long as you take at least one teensy tiny step each day towards the life you want, any aspect of that life you want, then you are one step closer and you will eventually get to where you want to be. I did that when I wanted to go to Wilderness school. I saw the school online and read about it. I called and talked to the school. I started putting away as much as I could each paycheck. I went and visited the school out of state to make sure I wanted to go there. I kept saving, I kept saving, I kept saving. I packed up my car and moved. I camped while I went to the Starbucks everyday to look for a job and a place to live and I found both, and I went to school. One step at a time. When I first found it I thought it would take forever until I could afford to go. And it did take a long time, 2 years. But I did save up $10,000 for tuition and I did get there. You can do this too. I know you can. Just take one step at a time and you can make it happen. Please feel free to share in the comments below your own experience of how you took tiny steps to reach a big goal, or any other thoughts or questions. I’d love to hear from you!
